No need to shout, I hear you loud and clear.
Connect the "+" and "-" cables from a stereo amp to one speaker in the
correct order, to the other in the reverse order. You have just "Reversed
the polarity of the audio signal", and should enjoy a "wide" sound. This
$0.10-Surround is common on cheapo ghettoblasters. But hey, CHEAPO is my
middle name!
To achieve this on digital domain, transform each sample value so it
becomes its "complement" - highest becomes lowest etc. GoldWav 2.0 and
NoiseMaster 2.01R do "invert" - that's it.
Note: if eventually the stereo material will be broadcasted in mono, beware
- "reversed" material tends to cancel its "twin" (imagine mono as adding up
the amplitudes of L and R).
BTW, is there a 3D implementation for GUS? do I miss something important?

As has been ascertained, the problem is _not_ the dropping of program
changes (they aren't), but the fact that the program changes silence
all voices on the channel on which they are issued. So staggering program
changes with note ons will only work for short-duration notes that end
about the same time as the program change is issued. Since Yamaha and
Roland synths do not shut off the voices on a channel when a program
change is issued, the GUS driver should fall in line and do the same
for compatibility.

GJBLUES3 is going to EPAS today. Lexy F added an organ
track in GJBLUES2 and I did a remix and added a baritone
sax to give it a little more bottom end. It still needs
replacing the "scratch tracks" for guitar and drums.
I also included a POP file for those who have
PowerChords Pro. Download it and drop me a line if you
want to modify it. After you produce GJBLUES4, upload
and let me know.
It has taken on much more of a jazz flavor in the last
few rounds. It's an interesting mix.

Subject: GUS Patchmaking: Where and How!
I uploaded a file to epas this morning that some of you may be
interested in. It contains basic information on finding samples,
converting them to WAVs, and tips on patchmaking in general.
When I first got my GUS a few months ago, making custom patches
was one of the first things that I wanted to do. Unfortunately, apart from
Francois' tutorials (which are great), I lacked some basic information,
such as where to go for 16-bit samples, and how to use them one I'd
found them.
That's why I wrote patching.wri (available on
archive.epas.utoronto.ca in pub/pc/ultrasound/submit/patching.zip).
This reference document contains information that I wish I'd had when I
was starting out--hopefully someone else can benefit from this info as
well. Here's the table of contents:
1. FINDING SOME SAMPLES--the Kurzweil K2000 Archive
and converting sounds with GoldWave 2.0(tm).
2. THE JOYS OF LOOPING--Tips on looping, Forward and
Bi-directional
3. MINIMIZING THE SIZE OF YOUR SAMPLES--Self-explanatory
4. FURTHER SOURCES OF SAMPLES--Where to get them, how
to convert them.
5. YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS--No, it's not what you think!
There is information in this reference for both the beginner and expert
"patchmaker."
I would appreciate any feedback on this reference, both
positive and (constructively) negative. Also, if you find the information
useful, please drop me a line and say so!
Thanks to the entire GUS community, for a synergy of support!

The only reasonable behavior (and what I believe the standard says is
correct) is to send all the events out as fast as possible. No events
should be lost.
After all, having the same midi time stamp just means that you want the
events to happen at the same time (like having all the notes of a chord
play at once). Of course, since it is a serial protocol, the events have
to go out one at a time. If there is no prioritization scheme, then the
program change could happen after (or part way through) the other events
so the worst case behavior would be to have the notes which were played
at the same time come out in the old sound, and then any following notes
come out in the new sound.
If there was a prioritization scheme, it seems to make sense to send the
program change message first, although even then you can be burned by some
older synths, which stop looking at the midi stream for a few milliseconds
after each program change.
In either case however, it appears that your problem is worse than just
getting the ordering of the notes wrong. Losing midi events is bad.
As an aside, I've noticed that, if Windows is really working hard, the gus midi
drivers seem to stop playing, but continue to eat events. This has the effect that
you don't hear part of the song, but the timing remains constant. This is
quite a bit different behavior from the MPU-401 drivers which I use: In that
case, the driver plays all the notes, but the timing gets buggered up.
I don't know which effect I dislike more (both are lousy), but I wonder if this
may also be related to the problem you are having.

Subject: New patches uploaded to epas- hugepat.zip
hugepat contains three LARGE monosampled gus patches. They are all over 64k
and require the drivers included with pmaker lite (pmak110.zip) to work
properly.
risset - Csound example files arpeggator instrument base note approx 103Hz
Sounds like: Seven sine waves slewing together.
neu - Vocal sample of Ken Kesey saying 'new sensations' treated with Csound
Sounds like: a shotgun in an aircraft hanger
flanger program. 'Explosive' enveloping in the sample. Remember
patch maker lite is the only one that can cope with the big samples
d50 - d50 sample off eps disk various.gkh, ripped with epsdisk & instedit
Sounds like: a xylophone with a breathy tail.
All 16 bit, not tuned very well. I can never see the point in tuning mono
sampled stuff.
PS. Ive had the dropped note following program change problem too.
Im sure the new drivers are making the sequencer I use crash (with GPF)

Subject: Patches
There was a lot of talk about new replacement patches for the
gus sometime back. Like the 1MB piano, a better sounding piano.
Where would I find this stuff ? What site ?
Thanks!

Subject: Space Debris fixed!
Well, thanks to Maruku, Josh and Phat for pointing out that the distribution
of the Gravis disks has a corrupt version of Space Debris. I found a version
of this mod at wuarchive in the Amiga section and it now plays the way its
supposed to. Great! I still can't figure out how come it used to play
properly and then stopped. However.... Thanks again, guys.
An aside...as I was looking for the mod file, I went to some of the ultrasound
mirror sites. I thought these mirrors were supposed to have everything that
was ever validated at epas. I was surprised to find very little at orst and
nothing at all at wuarchive (ok, ok, wuarchive is probably getting their
system back up). If this is temporary, I appologize. I have uploaded stuff
at epas in the past, and one file is missing. I could just upload it again,
but that's not my point. Anyway, if noone's noticed this before, maybe this
can be corrected.
Thanks again.
